I think that Cardassians are one of the few races where gender is not an issue. Only professionalism and vocational aptitude matter. There are more common career choices and less common career choices but it depends on the professional field not on the gender. Certain career choices are easier for men because they involve physical strength, taking risks and long absences from home others favor attention to detail, analysis and don’t involve leaving home and here women prevail. Reaching top positions in a given field is difficult for everyone.

Since most women prefer to combine their career with their childbearing functions, they usually stay away from professional fields that require long absences and perils. Marriage is valued in Cardassian society so women consider their marriage and children just as important as their job. Those who prefer to put their career choice first can choose a more demanding vocation with all the stemming from it purely personal disadvantages that affect both genders. So career first or family first is a question that each person has to handle themselves. Military personnel, male or female, may spend their lives on border colonies or on patrol vessels so they may not have time for a social life or a marriage. Even if they have families, they see them rarely. If they choose a career in administration, engineering, building, services they will remain on Cardassia. Cardassian society offers plenty of models so each person has to make their choice.

I believe Cardassians have realized that male and female way of thinking complement each other and have learned to use all resources that their society can offer.

I am absolutely certain that there is a daycare system.
It is the best method to explore and document the true talents and inclinations of your citizens right from the start. An efficient state will not miss an opportunity like this ;) The files of the nursery school teachers are valuable resources for all aspects of future development.

Parental leave and maternity protection? I have no clue .... but maybe this is one more reason why a military career isn't the best choice for women ... sadly … but it would not be advisable to breastfeed your child on the bridge of a warship … and there are still some few things men are not capable to do ….

I would happily give my eye-teeth to read the nursery school files of little Skrain Dukat or little Corat Damar.
Or imagine young Enabran Tain ... I need to read those files ...

Mothers - sacrificing their careers by giving birth to a certain (preferably great) number of children and nurturing them towards being useful compatriots - should be rewarded anyway. At least a medal should be awarded officially in recognition of their services to our great and benevolent state.

As far as I remember, Cardassian children start with the mental training when they are 3 or 4 years old so some form of kindergarten or nursery exists. There are a special type of teachers whose role is to assess the aptitudes of the children with respect to their further career development.

I don’t think that Cardassian women are housewives – they have both career and family. The state is not likely to foster idle women sitting in the cafes and parks, doing nothing and pretending to be looking after their children. I suppose that they choose a career that they can manage and live with their choice. So I suppose their maternity leave is very short.

Those files are classified, a matter of national security, but here are several leaks.

“Little Enabran, a real devil, he claimed he saw a two big voles fighting in the playground, all the personnel rushed out to chase away the vermin and in the meantime, Enabran entered the kitchen and ate several Larish pies. Born to be an Obsidian.”

Skrain Dukat’s dossier says, “Lying and manipulating to perfection, all children do what he tricks them into, they get into trouble, he always gets away with it, he either denies vehemently or says he was sorry if denial does not work. Always looks innocent and very convincing, even the teachers can’t be angry with him for too long. Born to be a leader and politician.”

Here is what they say on little Corat, “Too gullible and straightforward, brave and honest but not a leader, can’t play dirty, a career in the army would be good for him, he likes following orders and does not question them. However, if pushed to his limits, he starts acting, he punched in the face a much bigger kid who attacked one of his friends, who would expect it from him?”

Awww, these files are really adorable! :D

I agree with you that the parental leave would be as short as possible. Half a year at most. Then the extended family would take over the greatest part of the child care. In this way also retired family members - like the old ones or crippled war veterans - would still feel useful and the binding to the family would be strengthened further.
Grandparents and great-grandparents are a well of wisdom and fill the hearts of the very young ones with tales and stories - and love. :)
No nursery school can replace this bond. These are the benefits when many generations live under one roof and take care of each other.

dont get me wrong but when I see the thread title Feminism as a bloke my initial thought is " nah".

I have no issue with equal rights, its just unfortunate so many man haters have used "feminism" to devalue a lot of what feminism should be, and the work of genuine decent women who do such good work in getting women what they rightfully deserve.

As for feminism in cardassia, I dont know,
The reality in life is men and women are different and no matter what we do there will always be a difference.
I suspect on cardassia income, rights, power etc is as equal as it would be in the federation.

The fact that women stick to the sciences for example and men the military is not set in stone I believe. but a general broad statement.

How often have we heard people say the man goes to work and the woman stays and home and brings up the kids, yet we all know that is basically a general broad statement.

The klingons are the nearest things to ancient Celts.

Their love of fighting, drinking and love of wakes.
Also the women celts were equal to the men, they even fought alongside in the battles, no sexism with the celts

There was a comment in trek about klingon women how they were the mothers to their children, partners in battle and great fun at parties, which always struck me as celtic as you can get.

The cardassian also seem very equal in that area but not so much on the battlefield but understandable.
